ASI FREE SELF-ASSESSMENT
NZ Data Resilience Checklist
A 10-point scored self-assessment based on Veeam 3-2-1-1-0 principles.
Evaluate your backup coverage, immutability, recovery confidence, security, and operational maturity.
How to Use This Checklist
Before You Start
This checklist is designed for IT managers, infrastructure leads, and anyone responsible for data protection. Work through each of the 10 questions honestly — partial credit counts, as it shows you've started. The whole assessment should take about 10 minutes.
Scoring Key
For each question, select the score that best matches your current state.
- 0 Not in place — This control does not exist or has not been implemented.
- 1 Partially in place — Some progress has been made, but gaps or inconsistencies remain.
- 2 Fully in place — This control is implemented, documented, and regularly verified.
Maturity Bands
Your total score (out of 20) maps to one of three maturity bands.
- Critical Gaps 0 – 8 — Significant exposure — immediate action recommended.
- Developing 9 – 14 — Foundations in place but key gaps remain.
- Resilient 15 – 20 — Strong posture — focus on maintaining and improving.

What your score means
Critical Gaps 0 – 8
Significant exposure — immediate action recommended.
Significant exposure to data loss, ransomware, or compliance failure. Your backup environment has fundamental gaps that require immediate attention.
Next step: Start with a Foundation engagement to close the biggest risks — establish proper copy counts, offsite storage, and basic recovery procedures.
Developing 9 – 14
Foundations in place but key gaps remain.
Some foundations are in place, but key gaps remain — particularly around immutability, recovery testing, or operational documentation.
Next step: A Resilience or Supported engagement adds immutability, documented recovery testing, and operational runbooks to close the remaining gaps.
Resilient 15 – 20
Strong posture — focus on maintaining and improving.
Strong data protection posture across technical controls and operational maturity. Focus on maintaining discipline and continuous improvement.
Next step: Consider Managed services to maintain this standard with less internal overhead — freeing your team to focus on strategic initiatives.
